Diptyque fragrances are some of my favourite and I have a pretty hefty collection of them now. When people ask me what my favourite scent is….it is actually probably the Diptyque Do Son Eau de Toilette. I think it’s an absolute stunning fragrance and it evokes wonderful memories for me as it is a fragrance I have worn for over 10 years now.
Diptyque Do Son: Tuberose, Orange blossom, Jasmine, Amber wood
Diptyque Do son is described as a floral fragrance for women. It has notes of tuberose, orange blossom, jasmine and amber wood. It’s a very pretty and warm fragrance and if you want to know more about the story of it then keep reading, but first I’m just going to chat about Diptyque as a brand and a little bit about their backstory.
About Diptyque :
We all have heard of Diptyque : possibly mainly for their candles, as they have become SO popular over the last 5 years or so (thanks bloggers on Instagram) but I want to tell you a little more about their background and history so you get a bit more insight into what this luxury Paris-born fragrance house is all about.
Diptyque is a contemporary, emblematic, pioneering Parfumerie Maison that was founded over 60 years ago. It was created to celebrate authentic luxury, and the art of living through the senses, where fragrance and art are integral to everything. It has an ever-growing collection of scented candles, home fragrance, perfume and body care.
The original and flagship Diptyque boutique is at 34 Boulevard St Germain, Paris which you will see written around the labels on the fragrances. This store has also inspired fragrances in it’s own right (34) and it truly is the mothership of all things Diptyque!
Diptyque Fragrances.
I think they are truly stunning, sophisticated and there is a signature scent for everyone. They currently do over 30 fragrances. They come in both eau de toilette (white labels on the bottle) and eau de parfum (black labels). The Eau de Parfum collection are stronger, with a higher concentrate of perfume oils. Diptyque also do many fragrance add on’s such as solid perfume, roll-on’s and hair perfume. I love the oil roll-on’s for the handbag and they really are very strong.
Diptyque Do Son.
Tuberose, Orange blossom, Jasmine, Amber wood
As a child, Yves Coueslant, one of diptyque’s founders, spent his summers in Do Son, in Halong Bay. The sea breeze carried with it the heady, spicy scent of tuberoses. Do Son has the delicateness and persistence of a memory from a childhood in Indochina – a memory of flowers in all their sensual delight.
Diptyque Do Son was created and launched in 2005 and is described as a floral fragrance for women. The nose behind this fragrance is Fabrice Pellegrin. Top notes are African Orange flower, iris and Rose; middle notes are Tuberose and Pink Pepper; base notes are Benzoin and Musk.
This fragrance is really built all around the intoxicating scent of the tuberose flower which takes centre stage. Think white flowers against wood…a warm sea breeze and twinkling, quiet reflection in water. It is a sensual delight and I find it really warming and pretty.
My personal Diptyque Do Son journey : I used to work in a perfume boutique many years ago and got chatting to a lady who started to talk about this fragrance. She was a casual-glam lady : she had money but it wasn’t on show….someone who appeared super switched on to all things beauty and I have a feeling she worked in fashion and was a bit of a social butterfly. In my mind I was like ‘ma’am you are really fucking cool’. I think she was around 60…and she was off to Ibiza to probably hang in super-expensive-and-trendy-restaurants-where-people-wear-swimwear-and-chanel. She NEEDED Diptyque Do Son to take on holiday with her as it was her summer fragrance. She insisted that I smelt it at my next opportunity and that was the start of my Diptyque Do Son journey – that’s how it came into my life! The cool lady in the shop.
It is actually one of my all-time favourites scents from Diptyque. I *do* tend to wear it more in the summer, maybe influenced by my story above on how I got introduced to it. I think of it as Ibiza, warmth, holidays, dry sun and a sea breeze. Even though it is definitely a floral fragrance is has that bit of something that sets it apart from others.
What does diptyque Do Son smell like?
Do Son captures the intoxicating scent of the rare tubéreuse flower for an exotic olfactory experience. It is a floral fragrance for women and also has notes of orange flower, iris, rose, jasmine pink pepper, benzoin and musk. I think it has a warm sweetness to it : it’s a pretty, sexy and sensual scent. I prefer it as a summer fragrance personally but I know lots who love it all year round. You can certainly smell tuberose as the main note and I always notice the orange blossom straight away when it is first spritzed onto the skin.
Is Diptyque Do Son unisex?
It absolutely up to the wearer and personal taste. It was made with women in mind and I would say it’s very much a typical women’s scent in terms of sweetness and floral. Men’s fragrances tend to be more aqua / water / citrus and musky and this is none of those things really. It does have base notes of musk but it’s still not a very heavy or masculine smelling fragrance. As a gift I wouldn’t get this for a man unless they told me they loved it!
The Diptyque Do Son Collection.
As it it one of their best-selling fragrances, they have a big collection of all things Do Son scented for you to enjoy. Currently they do the Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum in various sizes, a soap, a refillable solid perfume, a hand cream, a hair mist, perfumed ceramics, a perfumed brooch (!!), shower gel and a body mist. Knock yourselves out.
The Diptyque Do Son eau de toilette bottle is in their signature glass oval-shaped bottle. The fragrances that have white labels on the front are Eau de Toilettes, the ones with black labels on the front are Eau De Parfums. They will also do limited edition designs and coloured bottles every now and then and you can get the beautiful Diptyque Do Son Eau de Parfum in a blue/aqua bottle at the moment too.
All the diptyque fragrances have wonderful illustrations and small details that you may not notice upon first glance ; if you turn the bottle around and look through the glass to the back of the label there is a wonderful illustration that is unique to that fragrance (as the image above). This will be a reflection on the inspiration behind the scent.
I aways have loved the unique diptyque packaging, it has become so iconic! It looks very chic, unisex and luxurious. I love the nod to their boutique in Paris on the bottles too – the address written around the outside ’34 Boulevard St Germain Paris’.
It can be really scary purchasing a fragrance you haven’t actually smelt in real life….I’ve only ever done it once myself BUT if you buy a Diptyque fragrance from the Diptyque website…each fragrance purchase will now include a matching sample. you can then use the sample to test the fragrance on your skin before opening the full-size bottle. Just make sure you don’t rip open the packing on the main bottle as Diptyque will only accept unopened returns within 28 days of original purchase.
Diptyque also do this wonderful fragrance Discovery set which contains x5 of their best-selling fragrances in 7.5ml sizes to try out. Included are Do son, L’Ombre Dans L’Eau, Eau Rose, Philosykos and Eau Des Sens.
