Byredo Super Cedar Review.

You know I love my Byredo perfumes! Today I am going to be chatting all about the Byredo Super Cedar : a wonderful unisex scent, that is often overlooked by it’s more glamorous-sounding counterparts such as the Mojave Ghost, Rose of no Man’s Land and Bal D’Alfrique.

The Byredo Super cedar is a modern scent made simple with powerful woody notes of cedar that inject energy, add warmth and lend verticality to the fragrance. Reminiscent of pencil shavings (you read that right!), it evokes ‘a sense of nostalgia for school days and simpler times’.

About Byredo:

Before we talk about the  Super Cedar fragrance, let’s explore Byredo as a brand. Byredo is a European luxury brand founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Ben Gorham, with an ambition to translate memories and emotions into products and experiences. They are know for their fragrances and have a line of bodycare, leather goods, accessories and more recently makeup too (VERY intrigued by this, yet to try). Byredo conceives objects using the highest quality materials available, and high-end design details to fuel a renewed approach to modern luxury. Byredo is currently sold in more than 40 countries.

You can read my overview of my favourite Byredo fragrances right here. This includes Rose of No Man’s Land, Gypsy Water, Mojave Ghost, Black Saffron, Super Cedar and Bal D’Afrique.

I have used and owned Byredo fragrances for around 8 years now and they really are some of my favourite scents in my collection. I love the chic and understated packaging, I love so many of the unique scents, the quality, and they are luxurious and a real treat to wear. If I see Byredo in someone’s bathroom I immediately think they must know their sh** when it comes to fragrance!

BYREDO SUPER CEDAR REVIEW

Born in 2016, Byredo Super Cedar is  is a Woody Floral Musk fragrance for both men and women. Top note is Rose; middle note is Virginian Cedar; base notes are Haitian Vetiver and Musk.

In a nutshell this is a woody, masculine scent with a dusting of rose. It, like all the Byredo scents, is classed as unisex but I would say this would definitely veer towards a more masculine taste. It’s a really lovely fragrance though. It’s quite dramatic yet casual…it’s warm, it’s comforting and inviting.

The wood scent in it.…is old...it’s pencil sharpenings and school desks, it’s old library-esqe, crackling smoky fires, cosy log cabins and church pews type of wood. It’s aged, antique wood. A little smoky and dark. It does have a certain sweetness to it from the rose but this is definitely a hint. Virginian cedarwood lies at the perfume’s heart, rounding out the character and giving it a little more depth. It’s certainly a woody scent, but it has depth and complexity.

The notes of the Byredo Super Cedar have been crafted to work harmony with the natural scents of both men and women. Apparently it can smell more masculine / more feminine on some than others. I find that on first spritz and initial wear I smell the wood, the cedar wood and vetiver, and after 20/30 minutes it does soften and more of the musk and rose is lingering. It softens up on me and becomes more beautiful on warm skin. It’s quite a delicious fragrance and definitely one to try if you like a simple yet complex woody scent.

Top: Rose Petals

Heart: Virginian Cedarwood

Base: Haitian Vetiver, Silk Musk

Is Byredo Super Cedar unisex?

Yes, as all the Byredo Fragrances are. It will sit and develop differently on different skin and of course, it’s up to taste and preference. I would say this is a more typical masculine scent though.

Are Byredo perfumes worth the money?

Yep. They are a luxury fragrance house. The quality of ingredients they use are luxury, the packaging they come in is hefty and reflective of the price.

Can I get Byredo Fragrances on sale?

Not really or often. I think the most you may get may be a 10% on a black Friday or something but it’s pretty rare for Byredo fragrances to go into sale.

One of the best ways to dip your toes into Byredo perfumes, without breaking the bank is to buy the Discovery Set (£35) which contains small 2ml samples of 6 scents including Bibliotheque, Mixed Emotions, Young Rose, Gypsy Water, Mumbai Noise and Super Cedar. They do other mini sets like this so do have a look out for these sampler sets.

Can I get Byredo fragrance samples?

They definitely do fragrance samples in shops where they are sold *sometimes* and stock depending as I have had them in the past. Just don’t rely on it though – it can be luck and timing! If I am going into a shop and they have no samples of fragrance to take away then spray it on lots of things : yourself, a fragrance card and maybe even an item of clothing so you can get a really good feel of the scent. As mentioned about, Byredo also do a small Discovery Set for £35 which contains 6 (2ml) samples. The fragrances in this discovery set do change sporadically so keep checking back to see when they have scents in you want to try!

Where is the best place to buy Byredo?

Byredo is currently sold in over 40 countries. You can buy Byredo here in the UK and a fair few luxury outlets and online. Online you can head to the Byredo website, Space NK, Liberty’s and Selfridges. To get to see these in the flesh, have a sniff and explore – then again, head to a Space NK or if you are in London you have Liberty’s, Selfridges, Harrods’ etc – all the fancy stores basically.

What are the best Byredo Fragrances?

In terms of most popular, it would probably be Bal D’Afrique, Mojave Ghost, Gypsy Water, Rose of No Man’s Land and and maybe Blanche.

Also, do read my post HERE which is the Ultimate Guide to Byredo Fragrances and an overview of the main scents.

So I hope that ties up all things Byredo Super Cedar. Honestly, such an interesting scent and one to dive into if you like the smell of churches, libraries, antique wood and musky candles. It’s beautiful in it’s own special and interesting way. I like to wear it in the autumn-winter months. It has a nostalgia for me and I love to smell it throughout the day – it’s both comforting and warming.

The Byredo Super Cedar costs £130 for 50ml or £185 for 100ml.
